Frequently Asked Questions

How much should I tip?

In the US, 15–20% is the common range for restaurant service, with 18% a typical default and 20%+ for excellent service. Use the preset buttons or enter your own custom percentage.

Can it split the bill between people?

Yes. Set the "Split between" field to any number of people and the calculator shows both the total per person and the tip per person, so everyone pays a fair share.

Does it round the total?

Optionally. Turn on the "Round up total" toggle and the calculator rounds the final total up to the nearest whole amount, adjusting the tip so the numbers stay consistent.

Understanding the Tip Calculator

The Tip Calculator works out how much gratuity to leave on any bill and splits the total fairly between any number of people. Pick a preset percentage (10, 15, 18, 20 or 25%), drag the slider, or type your own custom rate. Enter how many people are sharing the check and it instantly shows the tip amount, the grand total, the amount each person owes, and each person's share of the tip. An optional round-up toggle bumps the total to the nearest whole amount for easy cash payment. Everything runs in your browser, respects your chosen currency, and never sends your numbers anywhere.

How it works

Type your pre-tip bill amount, then choose a tip percentage using the quick preset buttons, the slider, or the custom input field — all three stay in sync. Set the number of people sharing the bill (it defaults to 1). The calculator multiplies the bill by your tip percentage to get the tip, adds it to the bill for the total, then divides both figures by the number of people. Flip on the round-up switch to round the total up to the next whole unit; the tip is recalculated so the math still adds up. Results refresh live as you type — there is no button to press — and you can copy or export them with the action bar.

tip = bill × (tip% ÷ 100); total = bill + tip; totalPerPerson = total ÷ people; tipPerPerson = tip ÷ people. With round-up enabled: roundedTotal = ceil(total), then tip = tip + (roundedTotal − total) and total = roundedTotal.

Worked example

Suppose dinner for four comes to 56.40 and you want to leave an 18% tip. The tip is 56.40 × 0.18 = 10.15, making the total 66.55. Split four ways, that is 16.64 per person, with each person covering about 2.54 of the tip. Turn on round-up and the total becomes 67.00, nudging the tip to 10.60 — roughly 16.75 each. Now everyone knows their exact share without scribbling on the receipt.

Tips & common mistakes

  • In the US, 15–20% is standard for sit-down restaurant service; 18% is a safe default and 20%+ rewards excellent service.
  • Tipping customs vary widely by region — the US 15–20% norm is unusually high. In the UK around 10% is common, much of Europe rounds up or relies on an included service charge (5–10%), and in countries like Japan and Australia tipping is uncommon or not expected, so check local norms before you use this tool.
  • Use the round-up toggle when paying cash so the total lands on a clean note and you skip the loose change.
  • For larger groups, check your bill for an automatic gratuity (often added for parties of six or more) so you don't tip twice.
  • Tip on the pre-tax amount if you want to be precise, though tipping on the full bill is common and only costs a little more.
  • Set the split count before you leave so everyone can send their exact share — the tip-per-person figure makes splitting transparent.
