Understanding the GST Calculator

The GST Calculator works out India's Goods and Services Tax on any price. Use Add GST mode when you have a price before tax and want the GST amount and the final inclusive total, or Remove GST mode when you have a GST-inclusive price and need to strip the tax back out to recover the base value. Enter an amount, pick a rate slab (0%, 5%, 12%, 18% or 28%), and the tool instantly shows the base price, the tax, and the total. It also splits the tax both ways at once: CGST + SGST for an intra-state supply and IGST for an inter-state supply. Everything runs in your browser and displays in ₹, so your figures stay private.

How it works

GST is a destination-based consumption tax charged as a percentage of the taxable value. In Add GST mode the amount you enter is the base (pre-tax) price: the tool multiplies it by the rate to get the GST, then adds that to give the inclusive total. In Remove GST mode the amount is treated as tax-inclusive, so the tool divides it back out to find the original base and reports the tax that was embedded. It then shows how that tax is levied depending on the type of supply. For a supply within the same state (intra-state), GST is split equally into Central GST (CGST) and State GST (SGST), each at half the headline rate. For a supply across state lines (inter-state), the whole rate is charged as a single Integrated GST (IGST). The rupee tax is identical either way; only the split into heads differs.

Add GST: GST = base × (rate ÷ 100); Total = base + GST. Remove GST: base = inclusive × 100 ÷ (100 + rate); GST = inclusive − base. Intra-state: CGST = SGST = GST ÷ 2. Inter-state: IGST = GST.

Worked Example

Take a product priced at ₹10,000 before tax in the 18% slab. In Add GST mode the tool shows a base of ₹10,000, GST of ₹1,800, and an inclusive total of ₹11,800. For an intra-state sale that ₹1,800 splits into CGST ₹900 (9%) + SGST ₹900 (9%); for an inter-state sale it is IGST ₹1,800 (18%). Now reverse it: a GST-inclusive price of ₹11,800 at 18%. In Remove GST mode the base is 11,800 × 100 ÷ 118 = ₹10,000 and the embedded GST is ₹1,800, confirming the total of ₹11,800.

Tips & Common Mistakes

  • Confirm which slab applies to your item first — the rate (0, 5, 12, 18 or 28%) depends on the goods or service and its HSN/SAC classification.
  • Choose CGST + SGST for a sale within your own state and IGST for a sale to another state or a union territory; the total tax is the same, only the split changes.
  • For intra-state supply each of CGST and SGST is exactly half the headline rate, so an 18% slab means 9% + 9%.
  • Use Remove GST mode on any MRP or receipt total that already includes tax to recover the base price and the GST hidden inside it.
  • GST is charged on the taxable value, which may differ from the sticker price after discounts — calculate on the net amount actually charged.
  • Rates and classifications are revised by the GST Council from time to time, so verify the current slab for your commodity before filing or invoicing.

Frequently Asked Questions

What GST rates are applicable in India?

India has four main GST rate slabs: 5% (essential goods like packaged food, transport), 12% (processed food, computers, business class air travel), 18% (most services, electronics, capital goods), and 28% (luxury goods, cars, tobacco, aerated drinks). A 0% rate applies to essential items like fresh produce and healthcare.

What is the difference between CGST, SGST, and IGST?

For intra-state transactions (buyer and seller in the same state), GST is split equally between CGST (Central GST) and SGST (State GST). For inter-state transactions, IGST (Integrated GST) applies at the full rate. For example, 18% GST on an intra-state sale = 9% CGST + 9% SGST. The same 18% on an inter-state sale = 18% IGST.

How do I remove GST from a price that already includes GST?

Use the "Remove GST from price" mode. The formula is: Base price = Inclusive price × 100 ÷ (100 + GST rate). For example, if the inclusive price is ₹1,180 at 18% GST: Base = 1180 × 100 ÷ 118 = ₹1,000. GST amount = ₹180.

Is GST charged on all goods and services?

No. Several categories are exempt from GST: most fresh and unprocessed agricultural produce, milk, eggs, fresh vegetables, healthcare services by clinics and hospitals, educational services, residential rental (for dwelling purposes), and government services. Petroleum products, alcohol for human consumption, and electricity are currently outside GST and taxed by state VAT/excise.

What is the GST on services?

Most services are taxed at 18% GST. Exceptions include: restaurants (5% without ITC), works contracts for affordable housing (12%), transport services like auto-rickshaws (exempt), aviation services (5% economy, 12% business), and IT exports (zero-rated). Professional services (CA, legal, consulting) are generally taxed at 18%.
