Sales Tax / VAT / GST Calculator

Add tax to a price or pull the tax out of a tax-inclusive total. Works for US sales tax, UK/EU VAT and India GST with quick presets for common rates.

Mode

Amount is pre-tax (net). Tax is added on top.

Quick rates by region

Pick a preset that matches where you are, or just type your own rate — the calculator works with any rate. US sales tax is set by state and local rules, the UK/EU uses VAT, and India uses GST slabs, so the right figure depends on your location.

India GST

Goods & Services Tax slabs (India)

UK / EU VAT

Value Added Tax (UK standard rate shown)

US sales tax

State + local rate, varies by location

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I remove tax from a total?

Switch to Remove-tax mode and enter the tax-inclusive amount with your rate. The calculator extracts the tax and shows the original pre-tax (net) price.

Does it work for GST and VAT?

Yes. It works for any consumption tax at any rate, with one-tap presets for India GST (5/12/18/28%), UK VAT (20%) and common US sales-tax rates.

Is it accurate for my state or country?

The math is exact for the rate you enter. Just key in your local sales-tax, VAT or GST rate, since rules and rates vary by region.

Understanding the Sales Tax / VAT / GST Calculator

The Sales Tax / VAT / GST Calculator works out consumption tax for any region and rate. Use Add-tax mode when you have a pre-tax price and want to see the tax and final total, or Remove-tax mode when you have a tax-inclusive total and need to extract the tax and recover the original net price. The same maths covers different systems around the world: US sales tax (set by each state and often topped up by county or city), UK and EU VAT (Value Added Tax), and India GST (Goods & Services Tax slabs). Region-grouped presets fill in common rates, but the tool works with any rate you type, so it is accurate wherever you are. Results show the net (pre-tax) amount, the tax amount, and the gross (total) side by side, formatted in your chosen currency, with copy, CSV and print options.

How it works

Pick a mode, type an amount and a tax rate, then press Calculate. In Add-tax mode the amount you enter is treated as the net price: tax is calculated on top and added to give the gross total. In Remove-tax mode the amount is treated as tax-inclusive: the tool divides it back out to find the original net price, then reports the tax that was baked in. The quick-rate buttons are grouped by region so you choose the right system for where you are: India GST slabs (5, 12, 18 and 28%), UK/EU VAT (20% UK standard rate), and common US sales-tax rates (7.25% and 8.875%). These presets are convenience shortcuts only — you can clear them and enter any rate, since rates and rules vary by country, state and even by item. The three result cards update together, and a friendly message appears if an input is missing or invalid.

Add tax: tax = amount x (rate / 100); gross = amount + tax. Remove tax: net = amount / (1 + rate / 100); tax = amount - net; gross = amount.

Worked example

Say a product is listed at $100 and your local rate is 18%. In Add-tax mode the calculator shows net $100.00, tax $18.00, and gross $118.00. Now flip it around: a receipt total of $118.00 already includes 18% tax. In Remove-tax mode the tool divides 118 by 1.18 to get a net price of $100.00 and an embedded tax of $18.00, confirming the gross stays $118.00. The same steps work whether that 18% is an India GST slab, a hypothetical VAT rate or a combined US sales-tax rate — only the number you enter changes.

Tips & common mistakes

  • Pick the preset for your region first: US presets are sales tax (state + local), the 20% preset is UK VAT, and the 5/12/18/28% presets are India GST slabs. If none match, just type your own rate.
  • US sales tax is not nationwide — each state sets its own rate and cities/counties add local tax, so combine them into one figure (for example 6% state + 1.25% local = 7.25%).
  • UK and EU prices usually include VAT already, so use Remove-tax mode on a VAT-inclusive total to find the net price and the VAT amount.
  • India GST is charged in fixed slabs (5, 12, 18 or 28%) that depend on the goods or service, so confirm which slab applies before you calculate.
  • The math is exact for whatever rate you enter — always check the current rate for your jurisdiction, since rates and rules change and vary by item.
  • Switch your site currency before calculating so the net, tax and gross figures display in the right symbol, then use Copy or Download CSV to drop the breakdown into an invoice or expense report.
