Timer & Stopwatch

A free online countdown timer with an alarm beep and a precise stopwatch with laps — all in one tool, running entirely in your browser.

00:00

Quick set:

Everything runs in your browser. The timer and stopwatch keep counting while this tab stays open, and nothing is sent to any server.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does the timer have an alarm?

Yes. When the countdown reaches zero, the timer plays a short alarm beep using your browser’s audio. Just press Start once to allow sound, and you’ll hear three quick tones when time is up.

Does the stopwatch record laps?

Yes. While the stopwatch is running, tap Lap to mark a split. Each lap shows both the time for that segment and the total elapsed time, so you can compare splits at a glance.

Does it keep running in the background?

The timer and stopwatch run while this browser tab stays open. If your device sleeps or you close the tab, counting stops — so keep the tab open in the foreground for the most accurate timing.

Understanding the Timer & Stopwatch

The Timer & Stopwatch is a free, all-in-one timing tool that lives right in your browser. Switch between two modes with a tap: a countdown timer that beeps an alarm when it reaches zero, and a precise stopwatch that records laps down to the centisecond. Set a custom duration in hours, minutes, and seconds, or use the one-tap presets for 1, 5, 10, or 30 minutes. Everything runs 100% client-side, so there are no sign-ups, no ads interrupting the count, and nothing sent to a server. It is handy for cooking, workouts, study sessions, presentations, and any task where you need to track time accurately.

How it works

The countdown timer records a target end time from your device clock and refreshes the display several times a second, so it stays accurate even between ticks. When the remaining time hits zero it triggers a short three-tone alarm through your browser's audio — the first Start press unlocks the sound. You can pause and resume without losing your place, or reset to start fresh. The stopwatch counts up smoothly using your screen's refresh rate and shows centiseconds for fine detail. Tap Lap while it runs to capture a split; each lap stores both the segment time and the running total. Both tools pause automatically when you switch tabs so nothing keeps counting unseen.

Worked example

Say you are brewing tea that needs four minutes. Open the Countdown Timer, type 0 hours, 4 minutes, 0 seconds, and press Start — the large display ticks down from 04:00. When it reaches 00:00 you hear three quick beeps. Later, timing 400-metre running intervals, you switch to the Stopwatch, press Start, and tap Lap at the end of each lap. The list shows each split (for example 01:32.48) alongside the cumulative total, so you can compare your pace lap by lap.

Tips & common mistakes

  • Press Start at least once so your browser allows sound — most browsers block audio until you interact with the page, so the alarm only works after that first tap.
  • Keep the tab open and your screen awake; if the device sleeps or you close the tab, both the timer and stopwatch stop counting.
  • Use the 1, 5, 10, and 30-minute presets for common tasks instead of typing the duration each time.
  • On the stopwatch, use Lap to capture splits without stopping the clock — Stop pauses the whole run, while Lap just marks a checkpoint.
  • Pause and Resume keep your remaining time intact, so you can step away mid-countdown and pick up exactly where you left off.
  • If you do not hear the alarm, check that your device is not muted and that this tab has not been silenced in your browser's tab settings.
